Membership performance is a system, not six isolated percentages.
At its simplest, every membership total is the result of the same equation:
Opening Members
+ New Members
+ Returning Members
− Lost Members
= Closing Members
Each calculator above measures one part of that equation. Growth rate measures the net outcome. Acquisition rate andreturning member rate measure what came in.Retention rate, renewal rate andlapse rate measure what stayed and what didn't.
Where the definitions and populations line up, growth is approximately new acquisition plus returning members, minus losses. In practice, be cautious about combining percentages calculated against different denominators or different measurement periods — that's a common source of numbers that look inconsistent even when nothing is actually wrong.
Used together, the aim isn't just to answer "what is my retention rate?" but to start understanding how membership performance works as a whole — and, from there, what would happen if you improved one part of it.
