Big Conversations, Bright Ideas: Highlights from the Memcom Summer Party

We're still buzzing from an incredible day at the Memcom Summer Party last week!

Thank you to everyone who visited Tracy Gravesande and Damian Watson at the Layercake stand and took the time to speak with us. We appreciated the chance to have real, thoughtful conversations about the challenges and opportunities facing membership organisations today.

In the morning keynote, Prof. Adam Boddison OBE underlined the importance of continual learning and development in a fast-paced world. You could sense that theme resonating through the Barbican; there was genuine provocation of ideas, sparking new thinking. As a supplier to the sector, it was a valuable opportunity to engage in that dialogue and better understand real needs and future visions.

Thank you to everyone who attended and actively took part in Damian’s Leading with Intent session, which included exercises exploring how hype cycles and constant urgency can affect teams — driving stress, unhelpful decision-making, and even addictive patterns. He argued for developing “slow brain” strategic skills to counterbalance this, alongside the creative agility needed to adapt in a fast-changing environment. Crucially, he reminded us that what members ultimately value isn’t technology for its own sake, but professional development, belonging, and meaningful qualifications.

At Layercake, our mission is to help organisations make confident, well-informed decisions that strengthen their relationships with their members. We're glad to play our part in these sector-wide conversations so bring on the next one!
